Definitions

“Learners” are distinct edX users who have enrolled in at least one WisconsinX course, while “enrollments” are course enrollment transactions. Learners may have multiple enrollments. Learners include UW staff working in each course.

'Program': In the WisconsinX context, a program is a set of edX courses that lead to an edX certificate.

'Audit/Verified': Learners who purchase the edX certificate of course completion are 'Verified' enrollees in a course, otherwise they are 'Audit' enrollees.

'Fiscal Year': A period that an organization uses for accounting purposes and preparing financial statements. For the university, the fiscal year is from July 1 - June 30 (i.e., FY2016 = July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016). Summer is the first term in the university fiscal year.

A note on differences between 'Null' and 'Not in Program':

'Not in a program' indicates learners enrolled in an individual course that is not part of a program.

edX has not documented what “Null” means. The assumption is these may be certain edge cases of record statuses within edX, or it has a technical back-end meaning within edX. They are included here to reconcile with reports from edX.

Other notes:

The data in this workbook includes all course runs in all statuses, combining current 'Published' course runs with 'Archived' as well as very small quantities of data from other non-production course runs.

Data are refreshed on Mondays, assuming edX delivers data on schedule.
